Managing the Common Cold

Happy Friday from the Health Office!

The health office is seeing many students with the common cold. The common cold is a viral illness that causes a sore throat, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, headaches and body aches. The common cold can be spread through close contact or through the air when someone who has a cold doesn’t cover their cough or sneeze.

The first symptoms of the common cold include a sore throat, a runny nose, and feeling tired. Coughing and sneezing usually start shortly after. There is no cure for the common cold and it may last 7-14 days.  There are ways to prevent getting sick as well as protecting others when you are sick with the common cold.

Ways to prevent getting sick:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often (wash for at least 20 seconds)
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water
  • Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands
  • Disinfect surfaces such as keyboards, desktops, and doorknobs

Ways to prevent spreading the cold to others:

  • Always cough and sneeze into a tissue or your shirt sleeve and make sure you completely cover your mouth and nose
  • Wash your hands with soap and water especially after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose (or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you can’t wash your hands with soap and water)
  • Avoid close contact with others such as hugging, kissing, or shaking hands

There is no treatment for the common cold but ways to feel better include getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of fluids, and taking over-the-counter cold medicines that may help minimize symptoms but won’t make the cold go away any quicker. Ibuprofen may help with the discomfort of a sore throat, headache or body aches.

Parents: The Health Office cannot give cold medicine at school. Please give your child over-the-counter cold medication before sending them to school.

REMINDER: All students are required to complete the Student Emergency and Health Form. If your child comes to the Health Office needing over-the-counter medication for a headache, pain, etc., the Student Emergency and Health Form gives Nurse Lisa authorization to give medication to your child.

The form can be done on the Health Portal (email Lisa at lzick@theparkerschool.org if you need assistance) or on the website under Students & Parents, Health Services, Health Forms and print the form. It can be emailed, faxed, sent through the Health Portal, or hand delivered.
