I’m writing today on behalf of the Parker H2O Working Group, a dozen students and teachers who have volunteered to help our community learn from and manage the current drinking water situation at school. Parker H2O has identified three main strands of interrelated work, both for this spring and for next fall: education & community awareness; promoting alternatives to the single-serving bottles currently on offer; addressing the volume of recyclable solid waste generated by using bottled water. Updates and next steps in each area follow:
Education & Community Awareness: We joined the Justice Committee in presenting at Weekly Gathering and sharing current use data (2400 bottles/week). Next steps in this area include practicing a song (and dance?) for next week’s Gathering.
Promoting alternatives to the single-serving bottles currently on offer: Excellent news here! Water chillers with carboy-sized bottles are distributed around the building so that community members can REFILL BOTTLES. Next steps in this area include investigating disposable cup options to go with the chillers and designing an advisory-based competition.
Addressing the volume of recyclable solid waste generated by using bottled water: Simple message to all community members—bring a refillable bottle and use it! And continue to dispose of empty bottles appropriately so they can be recycled. Next steps in this area include exploring corporate partnerships to get reusable water bottles for everyone next year.
