The Flu - Winter Sports - Check the Health Portal

Happy Friday from the Health Office!

The Flu and the Flu Vaccine

Influenza (flu) season occurs in the fall and the winter (October to May) but usually peaks from November to March. The flu is a virus that is spread through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. The difference between the common cold and the flu is that the common cold may start off with a runny nose and sneezing and then may progress gradually. The flu comes on suddenly with many symptoms that may include:

  • Fever/chills
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle/body aches – usually severe with the flu
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Runny/stuffy nose
  • Vomiting/diarrhea

The symptoms can last for several days to two weeks and can cause mild to severe illness. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated every year. Once you get vaccinated, it takes approximately two weeks for the body to make antibodies to protect you against the flu but lasts throughout the entire flu season. Don't forget to cover those coughs and sneezes and wash your hands frequently!

ATTENTION: Winter Sport Athletes

Basketball, Winter Track, and Swimming will be starting on Monday, December 2nd!

If you haven't already done so for this school year, please go to the Health Portal (studentehr.com) and complete the "Sports 2019-2020 Athlete Documentation - Without the Student Emergency and Health Form". If you completed the Sports Registration but didn't include a WINTER sport, please mail Lisa at lzick@theparkerschool.org to confirm that your student is doing a winter sport.

Please Note: A current physical (within 13 months of the start of the season) is required and can be uploaded to the Health Portal under "screenings" and "attach proof of physical". Hard copies can be sent to Nurse Lisa if you prefer. There are no exceptions and students are not allowed to participate in practices if they don’t have a current physical on file. Sports physicals can be done at most urgent care facilities as well as CVS Minute Clinics.

Please Check the Health Portal for Your Student’s Physical

If your student has a physical on file with the nurse, you can go to the Health Portal under “screenings” and then look for “physical exam 2” and confirm that the date of your student’s physical is current (within 13 months).
