Vaping and Dabbing

From the School Counseling Office Sheila Kelly, M.A.

As many parents are aware, vaping has become a trend among teens. The following information contains some current trends regarding vaping of nicotine and/or TCH oil.

Vape pens of any kind are not allowed on the Parker campus. Although students who are 18 are old enough to purchase a vape pen, they should not bring this, or any other smoking paraphrenalia (including but not limted to rolling papers, tobacco, etc.) on campus.

Juul

The first set of images below are of a Juul pen. This is far and away the most popular method for vaping nicotine (with flavor pods) partly because the vape pen looks like a large thumb drive and is not always recognized by adults. This electronic vape pen charges in a USB port. Students who use nicotine infrequently might use this for a "head rush" but once they are acclimated to using nicotine, it can be very hard to quit because nicotine is highly addictive. The smell of this type of vaping is sweet, but there is no smoke: the flavor pods are warmed by a battery operated warmer and vapor disappears quickly into the air.

"Wax" Pens

A wax pen is used to deliver THC oil/THC concentrate to the person vaping. These small but potent amounts of THC concentrate are called "dabs" and vaping the oil is called "dabbing." "Wax" or "dabs" are sold in a hardened form and once placed in the pen, are warmed into vapor. Vaping dabs is extremely easy to conceal because while there is an odor (not as strong as marijuana smoke-smell but still there), the vapor disappears quickly. Here is an image of wax pens that would appeal to teens:

An image of butane hash oil (BHO), also known as "wax" is below. This can be carried in an airtight container like an Altoids tin to prevent discovery. A tiny amount of this concentrate is very potent.
