Community Information - May 22

Community Information Week 9

“…The final Exhibition is a “test,” yes; but it is really an affirmation for the student herself and for her larger community that what she has long practiced in school, what skills and habits she has developed, have paid off…”

Ted Sizer, Horace’s School: redesigning the American high school (Houghton, 1992)

Parker Families:

This week the pioneering Class of 2020 continued presenting their Senior Exhibitions!  Senior Exhibitions are scheduled next week as well, and if you’ve not yet attended an Exhibition this spring, here’s some encouragement from a veteran Parker teacher:  “…Attending one on Wednesday was a delight—it gave me my first burst of that positive energy that normally hits in a wave in May as students start showcasing their accomplishments and we collectively start feeling the impact of a job well done…”

This year’s essential question is “How can we create change?”  There certainly has been a lot of change for our school community, and the world around us, but not change that we had any control over creating.  What we do have control over is how we respond to the circumstances we find ourselves in.  In a May 3rd email sent out by Parker, click here, we outlined the changes Parker has had to make and the unanticipated, unbudgeted expenses Parker has incurred due to COVID-19.  Even though we’re still in the middle of this crisis—as a school, as a Commonwealth, as a country, as a species—we need to ask for your financial support, acknowledging that some folks who care about Parker and the good work it’s doing may not be able to consider a gift at this time.

Parents, I want to thank you again for taking the time to express gratitude to the Parker faculty. The daily influx of comments like this one make such a difference!

“…After being members of the Parker community for nine years, it came as no surprise just how resilient, caring and incredible the teachers and administrators would be during this period of online learning. We have always understood just how important revision is to this school and to the growth of our children—never has it been more essential than now. While we were fairly devastated to learn eight weeks ago that our son wouldn't get to experience a traditional end to his senior year (prom, final sports season, parties, graduation), the extraordinary way in which Parker revised pretty much everything familiar has profoundly eased our grief. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your thoughtfulness, commitment, connection and loving support. Parker, you will always be family to us…”

Our typical Monday email with weekly class overviews, etc. will come out on Tuesday morning.

Senior Project Exhibitions continue! The list of seniors exhibiting today is published below. If the Exhibition is open to the whole community, you will see a shared link in your email—please feel free to join as an audience member for those!

PreK-12 Students in our district who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals will be provided funds to purchase food through P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer), a food assistance program, while schools are closed due to COVID-19.  Additionally, The MA Department of Public Health's Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program is informing our health and community partners that WIC services are available by phone, and WIC welcomes families at any time. For more information about these and other programs click here.

A message from School Counselor, Sheila Kelly:

This week’s mental health and emotional well-being message is: Thoughts on Burnout and Self-Care.

Students who would like an appointment with Sheila can email her directly at

A message from School Nurse, Lisa Zick:

Lisa’s note this week describes a recent visit to Parker and the thoughts and feelings that went along with it regarding the Class of 2020.

What Kind of Girl (Alyssa Sheinmel).  What kind of girl stays after her boyfriend hits her?  Amber Smith, New York Times bestselling author of The Way I Used to Be writes, "Both timely and timeless, a powerful exploration of abuse in its many forms, as well as the strength it takes to rise up and speak your truth.”

Reminders - The Massachusetts Library System would like your input on what ebooks to purchase!  Go to to get started. Also, Sora has a ton of titles that are always available with unlimited access.  Go to or download the app and look for Available Now and Sora Sweet Reads in Collections.

The Librarian is In - Anything you can’t find on Sora?  Too long of a wait?  Let me know and I’ll see if I can order it!  Ordering an ebook is much quicker than ordering print!  I’m talking hours, not days.  Schedule a time to meet with Carolyn or shoot her an email at to see what’s newly released and to find your next great read!  Anything you can’t find on Sora?  Too long of a wait?  Let me know and I’ll see if I can order it!  Ordering an ebook is much quicker than ordering print!  I’m talking hours, not days.
