Doing School

For so many of you, “doing school” is helping you through this experience.  The routine, the intellectual engagement, the chance to connect with people, and the sense of purpose school gives you are all helping you to make sense of this challenging time and forge through it.  We commend you on making the choice to engage, and we are so glad that what we are offering is helping you academically and emotionally.  As one student recently shared with a teacher, “thank you for assessing and continuously providing us with work despite the circumstances.  I'm really grateful to have something to do, as it distracts me from the stress of the world's current situation.”

We know that for other students and families, “doing school” feels like an additional stressor on top of everything else.  School may always have been stressful for you, and now it only feels more so.  Parker has always honored the idea that each student is different, and we respect that each of you is reckoning with what “doing school” means to you in these current circumstances.  Your mental and physical health are what are most important right now, and we want to continue to encourage students who are struggling to, at minimum, attend advisory each week as a way to connect with others.  If you are not sure when your advisory meets, we are confident your advisor has sent you an email with those details, but you can always reach out to him/her and ask again!!  If you feel behind or don’t know what to do, please know that your teachers are hoping and hoping and hoping that you will engage with them so they can help you think about where to start or what step to take next.  No judgement.  All you need to do is take them up on their invitations to email or do a video conference!  Just pick one class and reach out to your teacher to get started.

Trust and Decency Online

We’re sure folks have heard of ‘zoombombing’ by now, and you may also have seen news stories about how some schools are experiencing issues with inappropriate student choices in online forums as they hold virtual classes. To our knowledge, this has NOT been a problem at Parker!  However, we want to emphasize that during Home Learning, Parker will continue to build and maintain a school community characterized by trust, decency, and mutual respect.  Rules and norms for using technology are included in the Community Handbook (page 27).  Please interpret the first standard “Respect the privacy, safety and confidentiality of myself and others by neither disclosing nor disseminating personal information on the Internet. This shall include email, chat rooms, and all forms of direct Internet communications” to include screen shots and other forms of recording that might take place during Home Learning:  do not save, record, share, or post recordings without permission of the parties involved.  Thanks!

April Vacation

For your planning purposes, we are clarifying that Parker WILL take a week off from classes during April vacation (week of April 20-24).  Teachers will not post lessons that week, nor will new assignments be given over the vacation.  Students who need to catch-up with past coursework should certainly consider using vacation time to do so (as would have been true if we were at school); however, teachers will not be available for consult during this week.  They will be taking a well-earned break from Friday, April 17 at noon until Monday, April 27 at 8am!

Advisors will continue to check in with their advisees via email and web conferencing, including one or more “live” advisory meetings per week!  If you/your student is struggling to organize time, get work done, or self-initiate, we ask you to please reach out to your advisor for support!
