Home Learning Plans - May 11

Home Learning Week 8

Highlights in this message:
  • Gateway Schedule Timing
  • Live Class Sessions
  • Links to Home Learning Plans for Week Eight!

Sometimes when you need inspiration, the cheesiest things do the trick.  So, if you need a good kick in the pants to get your week started, I’m recommending Shakira’s “Try Everything” from Disney’s Zootopia.  The chorus goes like this: “I wanna try everything/I wanna try even though I could fail/I won't give up, no I won't give in/Till I reach the end/And then I'll start again.”  Click here to listen and then get going with your week!

Gateway Schedule Timing

As you know from last week’s email, the plan is for our current Home Learning format to continue through Friday, June 5, when regular classes will end.  We anticipate that most Gateway Exhibitions will happen during “school hours” between Tuesday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 16.  Even more so than in a typical year, we recognize that families may have a wide variety of scheduling needs.  Some families might have highly restrictive schedules and need to know a Gateway date as soon as possible, while others might be completely unable to anticipate what their schedule will look like in five weeks.  Some are more constrained than ever, and others are much more flexible than usual.  By the end of next week, it is our intention to reach out to families of gatewaying students with a brief survey to understand your family’s scheduling needs relative to the gateway exhibitions.  We will then do our very best to honor your family’s needs along with the teachers’ schedules.  For now, if you/your student is working towards a June gateway, please think about reserving time for that gateway between June 9-16.  If you know right now that you have a highly restrictive schedule and need to schedule the gateway as soon as possible, please email Deb Merriam (deb@theparkerschool.org) to make those arrangements.  Otherwise, we will be in touch late next week to ask about your scheduling needs.  Note that the gateway presentations themselves will be done from home using the Teams app (the one we used for PLPs), and family and friends from far and wide can attend online!

Live Class Sessions

One of the consistent (though not surprising) patterns that emerged from PLP conferences was that students miss the social interaction that school provides.  Later this week, we will be putting out a calendar of some purely social opportunities (e.g., games and chats) that we will start hosting for students.  However, it is also worth pointing out that many, many classes are offering “live” sessions throughout the week, each week.  While we have taken a stance that we will not require live classes during Home Learning this spring (for some families that adds too much stress), we do highly recommend them!  In their weekly overviews, teachers have been specific about what each class session entails (e.g., discussion, direct instruction, peer editing/sharing, demonstrations, tutorial, etc.), so we encourage you to look closely to see what is being offered, both as a way to learn and as a way to get some social connection in your day.  If you click here (or on the thumbnail to the right), you can see the full calendar of this week’s live classes.  Meeting links and further directions are in your class instructions/OneNote.  Note that this list does NOT include advisory, which all students also have one or more times a week!
