Community Information Week 8

“…The Exhibition, then, is not only the target. It is also a representation of the way one prepares to reach the target. That is, school is about practicing to wrap one’s mind around real and complex ideas…”

Ted Sizer, Horace’s School: redesigning the American high school (Houghton, 1992)

Parker Families:

This week the pioneering Class of 2020 started presenting their Senior Exhibitions! Senior Exhibitions are scheduled over the next two weeks for the rest of the class. Having consulted with the seniors and their families, we decided this week to postpone their graduation ceremony until later in the summer: we’re aiming for an inclusive hybrid ceremony (both in-person and remote participation) during the first week in August.

Meanwhile, back at campus, contractors are hard at work installing a new four-season climate control system in the oldest parts of the building. This short video highlights some of that work, which would not be possible without the consistent and generous financial support of the Parker community.

Parents, I want to thank you again for taking the time to express gratitude to the Parker faculty. The daily influx of comments like this one make such a difference!

“When we chose to do something different for (our student) it was a scary prospect. We took him out of a great school system where his sisters were thriving because he simply wasn’t a round peg and jamming him in the round hole was sanding away his best edges.
Now we are in this remote learning setting which is greatly challenging for all involved...teachers, advisors, students and parents…The communication from teachers has met it along its course to encourage, motivate, influence and reward him along the emotional journey. I am so impressed with what he is managing with their guidance. They have found a beautiful way to acknowledge gaps as opportunities for his growth and development rather than as shortcomings to “correct”. His confidence is way up and his frustrations are manageable. We are so glad that we made the leap. This unfortunate circumstance crystallizes for me that Parker was the right choice…”

Here are the topics we’re providing new information about this week:

  • Senior Exhibitions
  • Spoon Wars
  • ECO Announcement
  • Friday Note from Sheila
  • A Word from Nurse Lisa
  • Parker’s Digital Library

Be safe and well, Todd.

Senior Exhibitions

As we shared on Wednesday, Senior Exhibitions began this week!  Exhibitions will happen over the next three weeks, primarily on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Each Wednesday and Friday, we will publish a list of that day’s Exhibitions in our community emails.  If the Exhibition is open to the whole community, you will see a shared link in the email -- please feel free to join as an audience member for those!

Congratulations to today’s Exhibiting Seniors!

Spoon Wars

Although we find ourselves at home and not able to see one another in person, we are excited to announce that the Spoon Wars will return. This year students will have the opportunity to unite with a team to transfer a digital spoon via email to each of their teammates as they compete for shared rather than individual glory. Next week, students will receive more information about Spoon Wars: Home Learning Edition and how to sign-up. Until then, if you have any questions, you can contact Matt Lindsey (mlindsey@theparkerschool.org) or Ryan Ruopp (rruopp@theparkerschool.org).

ECO Meeting

Mark your calendars!  Parker's Essential Community Organization (ECO)'s last meeting of the school year will be held virtually on Monday, June 1st at 6 pm.  During the meeting we will talk about wrap-up from the ECO Raffle Basket Fundraiser, the ECO mini-grants to teachers, possible Teacher Appreciation activities, and thoughts for the 2020-2021 school year.  ECO is actively looking for new members for its board and general attendees.  A link for the meeting will be available on Friday, May 29th.  Any questions can be sent to Sarah at svonconta@gmail.com or Deb at dsteigo@verizon.net.

A message from School Counselor, Sheila Kelly:

This week’s mental health and emotional well-being message is: Thoughts on Perseverance.

Students who would like an appointment with Sheila can email her directly at skelly@theparkerschool.org.

A message from School Nurse, Lisa Zick:

As the State of Massachusetts is set to open slowly starting May 18th, we need to be patient and do our part to protect public health and save lives.  Lisa’s note this week focuses on the measured approach to reopening Massachusetts and how The State is Set to Open Slowly.

Parker’s Digital Library

New & Featured Releases - Available on Sora or the Parker Library (Destiny Discover) website
Boys of Alabama (Genevieve Hudson). In this debut novel, a sensitive teen, newly arrived in Alabama, falls in love, questions his faith, and navigates a strange power. While his German parents don’t know what to make of a South pining for the past, shy Max thrives in the thick heat. Taken in by the football team, he learns how to catch a spiraling ball, how to point a gun, and how to hide his innermost secrets. O, The Oprah Magazine calls it one of the “31 LGBTQ Books That'll Change the Literary Landscape in 2020".  Available May 19.
Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, Bk 4) by Suzanne Collins. This is a prequel to The Hunger Games! The plot has been on lockdown and the only thing we know is that it begins on the day of the reaping for the tenth annual Hunger Games, and an eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is mentoring the underdog tribute from District 12.  Available May 19.
Keep it Together Keiko Carter! (Debbi Michiko Florence). Seventh grade is supposed to be a game changer. And Keiko thinks she's got it covered, especially with Audrey and Jenna by her side to shop for a new look, pick out a prime lunch spot, and even hit up that cute new bubble tea place after school. Her trio is ready to tackle life as they always have... together. Solid recommendation for middle school readers looking for lighthearted romance and plenty of drama between friends!
