Community Connections - April 29

Community Connections Week 6

Highlights:
Kyle Reeves

This week’s Community Connection is brought to you by Kyle Reeves—a Parker alumni of the Class of 2007.  Kyle is currently working in Paris, France as a research scientist at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique) where his latest project proposed systems to convert otherwise wasted heat into electricity.  Watch his video as he speaks about his senior project exploring the history of American volunteerism in China, his time at UMass Amherst and then University of North Carolina for his PhD, his move to France for a research position, and his hope that we all take this COVID-19 time to envision what kind of world we want to live in.  Two book recommendations he makes are Octavia Butler's science fiction works and Adrienne Maree Brown's Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds.

Senior Project Spotlight

This week we are spotlighting some senior projects from Ashley’s Senior Seminar.

EQ: How can I learn more about myself through travel and travel writing?

Excited to embark on an unforgettable adventure abroad, Helena spent several weeks traveling through Spain and writing as she experienced the joys (and challenges… she flew home right before Madrid went into lockdown!) of solo travel. She prepared for her journey by reading LOTS of travel writing and she kept a journal and sketchbook over the course of her trip. In addition to her beautiful journal, Helena is writing three articles based on her experience that she aims to have published.

EQ: What does it take to be a thoughtful stand-up comedian?

When covid-19 cancellations made performing a live stand-up show an impossibility, Patrick’s desire to humor us all with his unbridled wit and well-researched understanding of what makes jokes funny led him to creating a series of YouTube videos. His initial collaboration and interviews with comedians helped him prepare to make us all LOL.

New Self-Directed Learning Resources

Keep sending in your ideas!  Send us your photos!  Anything to help your fellow-Parker-as-we’re-stuck-at-home-Parents.  Our large team of photographers and editors await with bated breath for your input.  (Does two people at their home computers count as a “large team of photographers and editors?”)  And we do wait with wild anticipation!

  • National Environmental Education Foundation
  • How are Theme Parks Created?
  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
