Weekly Information for September 23rd

Weekly Information for September 23rd
Dear Parker students, families, and staff,

Parker is an amazing community! I have heard that refrain from just about everyone – and I feel it every day at Parker. To build a strong, vibrant and inclusive community takes all of us. Thank you for contributing every day.

Thursdays’s Back to School Night was a great example of a community coming together to support the hard work of raising children. Thank you to all the families who joined us and our staff who do incredible work by day and night. The evening had a very positive and productive vibe. Thank you to our families for your partnership.

Today we hosted our first All-School Gathering of the year – a tradition that we had to put on hold for most of the past two years.  It was a special opportunity to bring our community together as one, to celebrate our students and have a little fun. We host All-School Gathering once a month under the creative and thoughtful leadership of Cordelia Fuller. Thanks to today’s emcees, Marlena Delfeld, Ella Hanyaloglu and Relic Reilly and musical performances by Owen Madeira, Peter Nordhaus and Meredith Hill. It was a terrific inaugural event.

We recognized three students today for their accomplishments and contributions:

  • Bradyn Tomforde has been named as one of this year’s National Merit Scholarship Commended Students. Bradyn is one of about 34,000 students who took the PSAT exam and is being recognized for outstanding academic promise. Congratulations to Bradyn on this great achievement!
  • Jonah Bonner has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. There are only 16,000 semifinalists among the two million students who took the PSAT last October. Let’s wish Jonah luck as the application process moves forward to Finalist. Congratulations and good luck on this prestigious honor!
  • Cavan Rakip chose Parker as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout Project. Cavan determined how to rebuild the benches in the courtyard so that they are once again usable places to sit. We appreciate Cavan’s contributions to Parker and congratulate him for earning Eagle Scout, the highest honor earned by fewer than 4% of Scouts each year.
Thank you to our entire Parker community!
Brian

Seniors and their families are invited to join in conversation around the expectations, excitement, and challenges of the year ahead on Thursday, October 6th from 5:30-7 PM in the Gym. Senior Seminar teachers/advisors will provide an overview of the senior year, Senior Project, and the graduation requirements along with this year’s installment of “Dear Diary”—a not-to-be-missed crowd favorite! Please bring a dish to share!

Community Connections Night on October 6th

We invite all members of the Parker community to meet with the Class of 2023 and learn about their Senior Projects on Thursday, October 6th from 7-8:15 PM in the Gym! We hope you will offer suggestions for…

  • resources they should access
  • people/organizations with whom they might collaborate
  • experiential opportunities they could pursue
  • product ideas they might consider

Please feel free to bring guests!

PLP Conferences on October 14th

In the next few weeks, families should be hearing from their child's Advisors to set up a meeting time for PLP Conferences (Personal Learning Plans).  This is a student/family/advisor conference – if you are new to Parker, your child’s advisor will send you an email with a longer introduction to the process!  PLP Conferences are one of the traditions that help us to know our students well and support them in being at the center of their own education by setting their own goals for the year. For now, please make note of Friday, October 14th on your calendar, and we will be in touch in the near future with info about how to select a time slot on that day!

Save the Date: Nov 1 Parent Workshop

Please mark November 1 on your calendar and plan to join us for a Workshop on “Effective Parent Interventions to Support Student Anxiety and Distress” (see flyer here).  More info to come in the weeks ahead!

ECO Invitation

Reminder to join ECO for their first VIRTUAL meeting on Tuesday, September 27th 6-7:15 PM using the link in the weekly email to learn how you might get involved in supporting Parker and Parker teachers.
