Family Information for November 20th

Family Information for November 20th

On Thursday, you should have received an email that contained comments for each of your child’s classes. In addition to the weekly RYG (which you received on Tuesday); the Thursday “November Comments” email is a new communication tool we are piloting. Once a month, for November and December, we will send an email that contains progress notes for each class, using the “Strengths” and “Next Steps” language that we use with students on their rubrics. Note that while the weekly RYG is intended to communicate information about weekly engagement in class and assignments (essentially, student work habits), these monthly “Strength/Next Steps” comments are intended to communicate skills-based information about student academic performance. In addition, if a student is working towards a January gateway this year in AH or MST, you will receive a separate email from the relevant teacher sharing information about your/your child’s specific progress towards that goal. (Spanish Gateway emails will be sent in early December.) We hope that the specific skills-based comments for each class help to paint a picture of how students are doing in their academic skill development. Please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) directly with specific questions. We will also be sending an email this coming Monday that contains your child’s PLP. This should reflect the conversation you had at the PLP conference in late October. Some students/families choose to print these out and put them in a visible spot to help the student remember the goals they have set for themselves. Students will have time to monitor and check in on their progress towards these goals in advisory in the weeks and months ahead. Any questions about the soon-to-be-emailed PLP, please be in touch with your/your child’s advisor(s).

Student Meal Pick-up

For the week of Thanksgiving, the only meal pickup will be on Tuesday, 11/24, for all 5 days. There will be no pickup on Friday, 11/27. Normal Tuesday/Friday pickup will resume the following week.

Reminder that Parker is participating in a school meal program through a waiver in a USDA program that provides breakfast and lunch (at no cost) to any students ages 0-21. If you are interested in this program, please click here for information about service at Parker (and other locations throughout the state). Please SIGN UP for the program via this link so that we can anticipate numbers of meals needed: Student Meal Registration. Pick up hours are from 7 – 9 AM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Note that the program rules require us to provide meals on a first come, first served basis, so filling out the form allows us to better anticipate need. Any questions, contact Michelle McKenna mmckenna@theparkerschool.org.

Stuff that Matters – Self-care

"Stuff that Matters," is a series of short videos tackling mental health topics impacting students. Sheila Kelly, Parker's School Counselor, is happy to accept topic ideas from parents and students at skelly@theparkerschool.org. This week's topic is “Self-care.”

Information Sessions

Do you know anyone interested in Parker? Let them know our Enrollment Information Sessions will be held remotely this year on selected Tuesday evenings. Sessions are limited to 40 attendees. They should visit our website and select the meeting date of their choice from the available dates in the drop-down field: https://www.theparkerschool.org/enrollment/information-sessions-dates-rsvp. Enrollment applications will be accepted from December 1-February 1 for new students and siblings of current students entering grades 7-9. Siblings of current students must apply if intending to enroll at Parker.

COVID-19 Stay at Home Guidance and Flu Vaccine

As the COVID-19 numbers increase in Massachusetts and throughout the country, we would like to address some health and safety practices for families. Please DO NOT send students to school if:

  • the student or a family member living in the same household presents with COVID-19 symptoms
  • a student has been exposed to COVID-19 (close contact) and is in quarantine, regardless of a negative test result
  • a family member has been exposed to COVID-19 (close contact) and is unable to isolate from the rest of the family, regardless of a negative test result
  • a family member/student is AWAITING RESULTS of a COVID-19 test

Also, please don't delay getting the mandated flu vaccine for all students due by 12/31/20. Make an appointment now with your primary care physician or visit a local pharmacy that administers vaccines. Contact the school nurse, Lisa Zick, with any questions at lzick@theparkerschool.org.

We HOPE that our community will come together and purchase these very meaningful wall calendars to honor student work and raise funds for the school! Calendars will be available for pick up by December 17th — just in time for the winter holiday season. To support Parker Arts and Our Essential Commitment Fund, click here to order by December 1st.
