Family Information for January 22nd

Family Information for January 22nd
Parker Families,

This week the faculty and staff continued to grapple with the December community survey data summarized in Friday Announcements last week:  we’re actively considering the implications and possibilities for second semester and will continue that work next week.

Thanks for helping to spread the word about the upcoming deadline for submitting an application for Parker’s enrollment lottery.  The deadline is February 1, 2021, and that’s coming right up!

~Todd

Apply Now

Despite the pandemic, Parker’s enrollment lottery will take place during the first week of February.  Applications for students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th Grade are due on February 1, 2021; the application is available on Parker’s website.  Siblings of currently enrolled students have to complete the application, even though they will have preference in the lottery.  Prospective students and their families can attend a remote enrollment information session on Tuesday evening, January 26th, at 7:00.

Please forward this message to neighbors, family, and friends who might be interested in attending Parker next year!

Materials Pickup

Division Three students will have some materials to pick up late in the week next week (or on Monday, Feb 1), as they prepare for a new semester/new classes that will start on Tuesday, Feb 2.  Once Div 3 students get their draft schedules (mid-week next week), they will know which materials they should pick up.  We will send a more specific email to relevant students/families next week.  There are no new materials for pickup for Division 1 or 2 students at this time.

The lobby is open on school days from 8 AM – 3:30 PM. Other arrangements can be made as needed by emailing Monique at mbeganski@theparkerschool.org.

Featured Book of the Week

Verify, by Joelle Charbonneau.  Meri lives in a world without lies.  But when Meri’s mother is killed, Meri suddenly has questions no one else seems to be asking.  And when she tries to uncover her mother’s state of mind in her last weeks, she finds herself drawn into a secret world full of facts she’s never heard and a history she didn’t know existed.  Available in eBook, audio, and print formats.  Contact the Librarian at cedwards@theparkerschool.org for more information.

ECO (Essential Community Organization)
Faculty and Staff Appreciation Event

Valentine’s Day is in a few weeks and ECO is sponsoring a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Event.  The idea is simple - ECO is hoping to gift a book or bookstore gift card to every staff member.  If you would like to participate, you will be assigned a staff member and given information on their book preferences.  You would then purchase a book or gift card as a gift from the Parker community for that staff member and drop it off or mail it to Parker.  If you would like to participate or have questions, please complete this form.  Thank you for being part of celebrating and appreciating Parker’s stellar staff.

Seeking Long-term Substitute Math Teacher

Parker seeks a full-time, long-term substitute math teacher, starting approximately March 1, 2021, and continuing through the end of the school year in June.  If you know someone who may be interested, please send them this posting.

Parent Volunteers Needed

Reminder Parker is looking for 5-10 family representatives to participate in a statewide Virtual Advocacy Week hosted by the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association from March 2-4, 2021.  Your stories matter, are important, and will make a difference!  For more information on this opportunity to support Parker, click here Advocacy Week 2021 - FAQ - Google Docs.  You can also email Katrina for more information: ktedstone@theparkerschool.org.

Student Meal Pick-up

Reminder to click here for information about free student meal service at Parker (and other locations throughout the state).  Please SIGN UP for the program via this link so that we can anticipate numbers of meals needed: Student Meal RegistrationPick up hours are normally from 7 – 9 AM on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Our Essential Commitment Fund

As of January 21, 2021, the Parker community has already invested $163,500!  We are incredibly grateful. STAND UP FOR PARKER by making your donation here.

Tracking COVID-19 Numbers at Parker

Positive COVID-19 cases in the Parker community are reported to the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE), but if the individual has not been on campus, he/she poses no risk to anyone on campus and the data point gets screened out. We will now include weekly numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in this Family Information email. The following are positive cases in the Parker community from 1/16/21-1/22/21:

  • Staff –0
  • Students – 1

None of the above have been on campus.  If there is a positive case on campus, all close contacts will be contacted immediately by Lisa Zick, School Nurse.

DESE Reporting Website: https://www.doe.mass.edu/covid19/positive-cases/#weekly-report. Once at the site: click on the Excel box for a particular week, click on the District tab at the bottom of the page, and search for Organization Code #04780000 (Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School). The reported cases include students or staff who have been on campus within seven (7) days prior to the report of the positive case. If you have questions, please feel free to email Lisa Zick at lzick@theparkerschool.org.

Health Office Reminders

Please call or email the school nurse if any family member tests positive for COVID-19 or is a close contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.  Lisa Zick can be reached at 978-772-3293 x135 or lzick@theparkerschool.org.

Reminder that students should not come to school if:
  • the student or a family member living in the same household presents with COVID-19 symptoms
  • a student has been exposed to COVID-19 (close contact) and is in quarantine, regardless of a negative test result
  • a family member has been exposed to COVID-19 (close contact) and is unable to isolate from the rest of the family, regardless of a negative test result
  • a family member/student is AWAITING RESULTS of a COVID-19 test
