Family Information for January 15th

Family Information for January 15th
Parker Families,

Thanks to all the students, parents & guardians, and staff who participated in community surveys distributed in late December!  We had consistent response rates across divisions and excellent response rates overall:  85% of students; 75% of parents/guardians; 95% of staff.

Here’s an executive summary of what the survey data show:

School Model
  • Most parents/guardians (73%) say Remote Plus is working well enough, even though it may not be their preference
  • Most parents/guardians (68%) say they would send their child to school if that option were available
Student Wellbeing
  • Students rate themselves as doing better academically than socially/emotionally; adults concur
  • On average, younger students rate themselves as doing better than older students
  • Adults (parents/guardians and teachers) consistently rate student wellbeing higher than students do
School Experience
  • Most students say they are engaged in class more than 50% of the time
  • There is high and consistent agreement from students that they feel supported by their advisors/teachers, can find their course materials, and know how to get their questions answered
  • Many students say the stress of school is overwhelming and/or their workload feels like too much (more students in Div2 and Div3 than in Div1)

Parker’s faculty and staff have already started to use these data to inform planning for second semester:  any substantive changes to the school model would likely be implemented after February vacation.  We are looking at the school experience level (adjusting workloads, perhaps, or helping students manage stress differently); the student wellbeing level (how can we close the gap between academic and social/emotional ratings); and the school model question (how might more on-campus time support student wellbeing).  As this work unfolds in the next couple of weeks, we’ll use Friday Announcements to keep the broader community appraised of our progress.

Enjoy the long weekend,

Tracking COVID-19 Numbers at Parker

Positive COVID-19 cases in the Parker community are reported to the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE), but if the individual has not been on campus, he/she poses no risk to anyone on campus and the data point gets screened out. We will now include weekly numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in this Family Information email. The following are positive cases in the Parker community from 1/9/21-1/15/21:

  • Staff – 0
  • Students – 0

None of the above have been on campus.  If there is a positive case on campus, all close contacts will be contacted immediately by Lisa Zick, School Nurse.

DESE Reporting Website: Once at the site: click on the Excel box for a particular week, click on the District tab at the bottom of the page, and search for Organization Code #04780000 (Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School). The reported cases include students or staff who have been on campus within seven (7) days prior to the report of the positive case. If you have questions, please feel free to email Lisa Zick at

Health Office Reminders

Please call or email the school nurse if any family member tests positive for COVID-19 or is a close contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Lisa Zick can be reached at 978-772-3293 x135 or
